BAMBOO IN ALL ITS FORMS....
In Asia and especially in Thailand bamboo has always been a plant of choice because of its multiple uses.
Here it is not the small bamboos that we see in Europe and which beautifully decorate the gardens. These rarely exceed 2 or 3 meters and are a different variety.
Here the Bamboos manage to exceed 20m in height with trunks 20 cm in diameter at the base or more.
Let's see what are the main uses of bamboo.
- Cooking
Largely consumed in Thai cuisine, bamboo shoots will delightfully decorate all meats.
The bamboo shoot is cut very young, it is actually what is called the rhizome.
After baking and preparation it is a very tender vegetable that reminds a little artichoke.
- Furniture
We make many bamboo furniture, whether it is tables, chairs, beds, buffets etc...
The bamboo works easily, we use both the trunk as or so we cut the slats that one assembles, anything is possible.
The bamboo furniture is very beautiful and very solid and gives a real touch of exoticism.
- Building
Bamboo houses have been built in Thailand since ancient times.
At the origin it is because the material is everywhere and is therefore very cheap or free if you plant it yourself and on the other hand the shoot is fast.
A bamboo house is pleasant to live in because it is airy and bamboo is also a good insulator against the rays of the sun while being very resistant to water (which here is important in times of monsoon).
Also noteworthy, is it is important, that bamboo is little or not susceptible to termites, unlike other woods (apart from some essences like Tek but the price is not the same).
An example of this is an original construction made in Chiang mai which is a fully bamboo gymnasium that can accommodate 300 people.
A very beautiful realization, more anti seismic and a beautiful and true ecological alternative to the traditional culture.
- Scaffolding
You will be amazed to see bamboo scaffolds in Thailand and yet it is the main material used for these (one will not expand on the safety standards whose standards are a little... different).
The ladder
Here the employees of the electricity, the telephone and more generally all those who need a ladder, use the bamboo ladder.
Very solid and lightweight it has nothing to envy on scales made with other materials.
The Bridges
We would be incomplete without quoting the bamboo bridges that are numerous in Thailand (and Laos)
Quickly realized with the local material they cost little and adapt to all the configuration.
- Everyday objects
You can make all kinds of objects with bamboo, from the lamp through knives (yes, even knives and that cut very well!) and also ashtrays (all smokers in rural villages make their bamboo ashtrays) and still well Other objects.
- Rafts
Bamboo rafts have always been used on rivers to transport various goods (a bit in the way of gabarres in time on the Dordogne).
Today we do not carry any more goods with bamboo rafts, the pick up replaced them but we transport tourists for ballads or "Bamboo Rafting".
These are just some of the main uses of bamboo, there are still others like its use to cook food (including rice, inside the bamboo and which hides in the muffled).
A problem can be pointed out that is the flooding as the bamboo grows fast and easily tends to be invasive.
On the other hand, in the dry season it will lose its leaves and you will have to pick it up every day in quantities if your bamboos are near the house.
For those who have a swimming pool, I let you imagine the problem with thousands of leaves blown away by the wind.
Also, we will make sure that the bamboo is not close to the electric wires because in a thunderstorm and a great wind the bamboo bends and will be able to break the threads (we often see bamboos of 15m folding up to the ground in a hurricane).
Other than that it is a wonderful plant that one will appreciate in all its variations…
