POST OFFICE IN THAILAND, HOW IT WORKS ?
In Thailand the post office works very well and it can be said that its system and its organization are very close to that of Europe.
There are about 3000 post offices in Thailand and 30000 collection points, so you will have no problem finding one just about anywhere.
The Post office opens Monday to Saturday from 8am to 8.30 am to 4:30 pm.
Note that you will have to take a ticket at the entrance allowing you to display your number to go to the counter that matches.
The distribution of the mail is done mainly by motorcycle and the factors are often very loaded and are very hot under their helmet... a real work of strength and balancing sometimes.
In addition and outside mail the Post Office provides other services such as currency transfer and payment of bills (electricity, telephone in particular).
You will also find in the post offices a shop where you can buy for low prices of cartons to ship and envelopes of all formats.
The cartons are delivered unbuilded (flat) with string and Scotch. If you are not a handyman and do not understand how to build the carton, the person or people working in the shop will do it gracefully for you and with a smile…
If you are notified that mail is available at the Post Office you will be able to remove it for 2 months, just present your ID.
In Thailand, just like in Europe there are 5-digit postal codes (zip code) and these are registered after the name of the city and on the same line.
In addition to the Post office, express deliveries are provided everywhere by major companies like DHL or UPS (and others). On the other hand if you have to be delivered in a place a little ' exotic ' it will be better to give your phone to a Thai € when the driver will call you for you to guide him because the delivery men hardly ever speak English.
The post offices are easily referenced by their logo and the color of the post is not yellow as in France, but red.
The rates are pretty cheap and you have the choice between a normal or express shipment, the express delivery being by EMS service.
The delivery time is in the range of 3 to 5 days in express and between 10 and 15d in normal speed.
There is also a possibility of shipping by boat but there is a delay of 2 to 3 months. This said for high weights this is very interesting (80 euros approx for 20kg)
For a simple letter you will pay more or less 2 euros in normal and about 15 euros in Express.
For express shipments you will have to fill out a slip, much like at home for the recommended, this one written in Thai but also in English and nothing complicated.
You can see the rates below for parcel shipments.
The post office at the airport
There is a post office in the airports which can be very convenient in case of overweight of your luggage.
Indeed, when you come to Thailand you tend to bring back a lot of things, souvenirs, clothes etc... Seduced by the interesting prices.
Unfortunately the weight of the suitcase can vastly exceed the weight allowed and in this case you will have 3 possibilities:
1) Give up some things (what few like to do)
2) Put the addition in a carton apart (some companies of which Thai Airways accepts it)
3) to pay an additional cost in the order of €50 per kgs (which quickly returns very expensive)
If you have option 2, the best is to go to the Post office buy a carton for a few baht and the trick is played (the most annoying being to do the transfer of the suitcase to the carton on 4 legs on the ground among all the other tourists in the same case but...no choice).
You will pick up your carton on arrival with your suitcase (and the cartons are solid).
If you are in case 3 the principle will be the same except that you ship your carton to the post office directly to you which will return you much cheaper than paying the extra cost.
This is a solution that many adopt because it allows to buy without too much restriction.
You just have to add an hour to your deadline before embarking, the time to make your carton and ship it because there are often a lot of people at the post office.
For the foreseeable people you can also do it more quietly the day before you leave in a city post office.
So, when you're in Thailand, the Post office is very present, efficient and pretty much like home, so you won't be really displaced on this.
Good stay...
