NON-COMPLIANT HOTELS IN KOH PHI PHI...
At Koh Phi Phi the police recently launched a large control operation on the hotels on the island.
On (roughly) 130 hotels 104 have been checked and only 9 meet the requirements of a registration in the legality…
The primary cause is that hoteliers cannot apply for a license because they do not have official documents proving that they own the land on which the establishment is built (this for various and varied reasons that can go from the indivision to the wild construction through a verbal authorization of the owner of the land).
Some establishments have proof of ownership of the property and have the hotel license but are totally outside the standards in terms of safety or standards of minimum comfort and safety.
For the time being, all these establishments remain open with an injunction to regularize their situation in the short term under penalty of administrative closure.
This operation conducted for the time being in Krabi province and mainly in Koh Phi Phi will undoubtedly be extended to all the most tourist areas which bodes a rather bad result if we refer to the results on Krabi.
The tourist himself is not criminally concerned but, nevertheless, it is advisable to pay attention to 2 points which are paramount:
1) There is always the possibility of an administrative closure of the establishment during your stay which would have the effect of suddenly putting you on the sidewalk with your suitcases and find accommodation that meets all the conditions of Legality would be very complicated because of their rarity. On the other hand, especially in high season, finding accommodation at the right foot is not easy.
2) The problem of safety is not to be taken lightly. Having a room on the second floor with a fire on the ground floor can be of course dangerous especially since in establishments not complying with safety standards there are no fire extinguishers everywhere or when there are these have never been checked and fonctionnent often more.
Also note that online reservations with the most well-known plants (I will not mention names but you know them) do not guarantee that the hotels presented are to the standards since you can see that they present all a number of hotels between 120 and 130 on Koh Phi Phi…
If you book by yourself the best is to ask the hotel for a copy of its hotel license, this is already a first point.
You can also book by a local travel agency and there (provided it is serious), you will have no problem as it will have verified for you with the authorities.
Good trip…
