A MU SIR TRIBE VILLAGE IN THE NOTH WEST OF THAILAND...
The tribes of different ethnic groups are numerous in Thailand, especially near the borders of the west and north-west because coming from Burma or China mainly.
We have already spoken of the Akha or Karen tribes but not yet Mu Sir tribes (pronounced "Mou Seu").
Their origin is pretty poorly known (unless someone knows longer and I would be very happy). All of these ethnic groups have a more less distant and generally Chinese-Tibetan origin.
Mu Sir has their own language and customs where belief in spirits is an important part.
The habitat is a traditional habitat made of wooden houses, on high, often covered with leaf roof even if now the sheet tends to replace this natural material.
Usually the center of the village is occupied by a kind of arena where the main festivities are held.
People of the mountains, they live mainly in the mountains between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai.
They cultivate the coffee as well as different vegetable crops of fruits and vegetables. The government that has put in place for many years support for these generally poor populations, allows them to sell their crops through cooperatives that buy the products every day.
As everywhere in Thailand one can encounter commonalities with the Thai culture which they have largely impregnated over the centuries as respect for the elders and the place of the child who is sacred and guarantor of the sustainability of the culture.
The Mu Sir are extremely hospitable and are not stingy with explanations about their way of life and their culture if we know how to approach them with respect, dignity and discretion. You just need to know how to open the right doors to be welcomed as a real guest.
Some pictures that may give you the desire to meet them...
