BO SANG NEAR CHIANG MAI, THE CAPITAL OF THE PARASOLS...
Bo Sang near Chiang mai (at 8 or 9 kms) is for 200 years the village of the Parasols and is due to a monk who, passing through Burma was offered an umbrella.
Back in Thailand and to give work to his disciples and practitioners he decided to implant this artisanal discipline to Bo Sang.
The making of the parasol only needs bamboo and the tree "Posa" to make the paper.
Apparently it's simple and yet all this requires a lot of dexterity to make an umbrella.
There is a lot of parasol handicrafts in the village but it is necessary to sort between the tourist catches and the variety of workshops.
In the real workshops you will see all the stages of the manufacture of the parasols, from the cutting of the bamboo to the manufacture of the paper, its waterproofing, and of course its decoration according to the inspirations of the artists painters who are really real artists.
You will see parasols of all sizes, from the smallest to the object of decoration passing through the umbrella size parasol to go to the large parasol.
Here everything is done by hand according to knowledge transmitted from generations to generations.
One will be amazed to see that the paper, in fact the paper dough is made also by hand.
This is an excerpt from the tree "Posa". You get the dough in a water bath after one night and then you type the dough to give it the desired texture.
In a workshop everyone has its speciality, you will see women (because they are mainly women), build the frame, fix the paper, Imperméabliser this one...
For decoration these are mostly men.
Real artists who, for the pleasure of tourists, will be able to decorate you on the spot a T shirt (which you can buy on the spot) with absolutely beautiful motifs.
After 15mn they will have painted a T shirt absolutely incredible and for a paltry price.
Every year Bo Sang is the festival of Parasols where on the street parade the most beautiful parasols, a grandiose spectacle.
In any case a visit not to be missed if you are in Chiang mai...
